  • toqer I live in the South SF bay area (San Jose) but in my younger years I took interviews everywhere. At some point I started doing the math. (1/2 tank of gas... $20.. plus my time...) and just started getting really irate at companies asking me to do long drive in person interviews. One day I actually started asking them. for reimbursement.
  • marshac18 Wow. Class act. An actual letter and recognition that applying for a job takes time. Nowadays you're asked to code several projects as part of the application process
  • Mr_Pigg Never forget what the boomers took from us
  • matt95110 I have been through a lot of multi-round interviews in my career. If they ask for anything more than 3 interviews I ask to be compensated.
  • jesusonoro 1957: "we respect your time, here's compensation" 2026: "build us a full app for free and maybe we'll ghost you" wild how backwards we went

  • Affectionate-Ter... I interview for a job with Krispy Kreme in like 2014? I didn't get the position but received a check for around 200 bucks for my time.
  • OnTheEveOfWar My friend recently interviewed at a Fortune 500 company for a senior finance role. He had 7 rounds of interviews than was over a span of 2 months. They told him he was the front runner for the role and then got some Al generated rejection email from them.

  • die_katze Back then official letters had way less "heavy" language. Same for learning books.
  • Nervous_Car1093 Paying for an applicant's time shows a level of respect that feels rare today.
  • clynlyn Honestly at $900 an interview I'd just do interviews. That would be a true 9-5er.
  • yorcharturoqro That's something that should be done again
  • McDuchess The last job I got laid off from, in 2004, my boss was crying when she walked into my office with the pro gem president if the company. They'd already gotten rid of the profligate president, and were just tossing out people in reverse order of being hired.
  • All I got for my year and a half of 10 hour days accompanied by four day business trips two to three times a month was whatever vacation time I had left. No severance whatsoever. I became an entrepreneur after that.
